With the advent of Studio MX, Macromedia’s product interfaces have greatly improved over past versions. Generally speaking, I prefer the interface design of Adobe products to Macromedia’s, but between these two applications, Dreamweaver is clearly better. It is a great resource within the application, and it is a good learning tool. It integrates information from such sources as O’Reilly, a well-known and respected publisher of computer books, on areas including CSS, HTML, Javascript, and Accessability. Then again, the “Reference” panel built into Dreamweaver MX is a powerful solution.

The print manual doesn’t go in-depth enough about Dreamweaver there is an immense amount of material to cover with the new version that would be more accessible through a nice, dedicated, print manual.

Unfortunately, most of Dreamweaver MX’s documentation is in electronic form, which is inconvenient if you are trying to preview documents in the browser while consult the program’s Help information. GoLive provides a nice, thick, printed manual and online help. To get the most use out of either html editor, it’s necessary to consult the documentation. Despite claims by both companies that their product is the definitive solution, there are several notable differences that are important to consider, depending upon your projects, production workflow, and media considerations.

The username box should receive the user name which was supplied to you by IT Services upon the creation of your web space.

In the server box, enter the full web address of your site (e.g. The nickname you choose will not affect the content of the web, and is there for your reference. This button will create a new server connection. Click on the small icon that shows a page being turned (to the left of the trash can button). The first time you enter the window, there will be no entries in the upper half, and the lower boxes will be grayed out. Here, you can specify the web space to connect to. This will open the Available Servers Window. Click on the Server drop-down box, and click on Edit Server. Go to the File Menu, choose Server, and then choose Connect to WebDav (or File Menu, and then choose WebDav Browser, depending on your version). After this is completed by the Web Integration team, you will be able to connect to your site using the instructions below. (the default set-up is for users of FrontPage). A number of server settings must be changed to support this application.

IMPORTANT, if you did not specify when you requested your account that you would be using Go-Live to connect to your account, please contact the IT Services IT Service Center at x4544, and tell them that you need your website configured so that you may use Go-Live.
